Koyo Kouoh obituary
Briefly

Koyo Kouoh, who passed away at 57 after a cancer battle, profoundly influenced contemporary African art. As the founder of Raw Material in Dakar and later director of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art, Kouoh's work focused on showcasing African narratives and identities. Known for her curatorial brilliance, she highlighted themes of Black self-representation and pan-Africanism in notable exhibitions like 'When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting.' Her commitment to uplifting the African art community marked a significant legacy, particularly as she navigated the challenges facing institutions like Zeitz MOCAA.
When I started doing exhibitions, I saw how deep the need was for us to reflect who we are. It became important to construct narratives that resonate with our identities and histories.
For me, it wasn’t just about saving an institution; it was about the larger duty to uplift the entire African art community. The Zeitz was a pivotal player in that narrative.
