In his latest exhibition at David Zwirner, Japanese artist Yu Nishimura presents works that evoke a profound sense of grief and transformation. The pieces illustrate landscapes imbued with memory, reflecting a personal journey through time. Nishimura describes the exhibition as a creation of an alternate pictorial existence, suggesting a magical yet distorted interpretation of familiar spaces. The blurred aesthetics serve to highlight the underlying themes of survival and the passage of time, positioning the exhibition as a standout experience in 2025's art scene.
In the first moments I saw the works of Japanese artist Yu Nishimura, I felt this enormous sensation, a wave of grief almost, of what happens after the world is flipped upside down.
Nishimura says of the works, "This exhibition explores the creation of another place-expressed as pictorial existence-derived from landscapes with which I have connected."
The blurred nature of the works, the home being a place that feels distorted by something peculiar and magical is at the center of Clearing Unfolds.
This exhibition at David Zwirner captures a burden of survival and the subtle passage of time in a once familiar place.
