The Gochman Family Collection, founded in 2021, has appointed Laura Phipps, formerly of the Whitney Museum of American Art, as curator alongside Tlingit co-curator Rachel Martin. The collection, based on the Upper East Side, contains over 750 works primarily by Indigenous artists and has loaned more than 260 pieces to over 100 exhibitions worldwide. Phipps will collaborate with co-founder Becky Gochman and five curatorial consultants, three of whom are Indigenous. The appointment has sparked discussion in Native art circles regarding the underrepresentation of Native curators leading major collections that regularly exhibit Indigenous art, with scholars questioning hiring practices and institutional commitment to Indigenous leadership.
