In an Unlikely Pairing, Giacometti Sculptures Head to The Met's Temple of Dendur
""At once naturalistic and highly symbolic, Egyptian art resonated with his enduring search for both monumentality and humanity," Bouvard said. "The opportunity to present his work within a setting of such profound historical and architectural significance offers a rare and compelling perspective on his oeuvre.""
"The exhibition will showcase 17 of the artist's sculptures within and around the first-century BCE Roman Period temple, highlighting the connection between Giacometti's work and Ancient Egyptian art."
The Metropolitan Museum of Art will feature 17 sculptures by Alberto Giacometti in the Temple of Dendur this summer. The exhibition, made possible by a loan from the Fondation Giacometti, includes 14 works from the foundation and three from The Met's collection. The sculptures, primarily depicting feminine figures, range from 11 inches to over 8 feet tall. Curator Emilie Bouvard noted Giacometti's long-standing fascination with Ancient Egyptian art, highlighting the exhibition's unique historical context.
