I explored an abandoned amusement park and found stunning art deco attractions and a thriving artists' hub
"I explored a Maryland amusement park that was abandoned over 50 years ago. Nature has since taken over parts of Glen Echo Park - and so have artists. Some eerie attraction structures from the park remain and have been revived by local artists. A theme park on the banks of the Potomac River outside Washington, DC, was abandoned over 50 years ago."
"The grounds are quiet, the attractions are empty, and long vines cover portions of the art deco structures. I'm talking about Glen Echo Park, in Glen Echo, Maryland. I visited in 2022 and found remnants of the park that once was, as well as an artists' hub that has developed since it closed."
Glen Echo Park sits on the banks of the Potomac River outside Washington, DC, and was abandoned more than fifty years ago. The grounds remain quiet and many attractions stand empty while long vines and vegetation cover portions of the park’s art deco structures. Several remaining attraction structures convey an eerie atmosphere, and local artists have restored and repurposed some spaces. The site now combines remnants of the former amusement park with active artist studios, galleries, and community creative uses. As of 2022, visible remnants and a developed artists’ hub coexist amid nature’s reclamation.
