Michael Ovitz recently donated a remarkable 12-foot sculpture by artist Joel Shapiro to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Ovitz discovered that Shapiro, whom he acquired art from decades ago, is his cousin after sharing his excitement with his mother, who confirmed their family connection. This unexpected revelation led to a continued friendship, with Ovitz recounting their regular conversations for over 40 years after that fateful phone call. Ovitz has had an impressive career, notably co-founding Creative Artists Agency and serving as the president of the Walt Disney Company.
Ovitz expressed his excitement over discovering his cousinship with Shapiro with the words, âI was so excited, it was hard to get his work even then.â
Explaining how he learned of his connection to Shapiro, Ovitz said, âYou never asked!â was his motherâs reply when he inquired about meeting the artist.
