Historic Watch Recovered From Titanic's Wealthiest Passenger Heads to Auction
"Astor calmly stepped back, kissed Madeleine goodbye, and remained on deck as the evacuation continued, calling the anecdote 'one of the most poignant and widely remembered personal moments of the Titanic tragedy.'"
"The cable ship Mackay-Bennett located Astor's body a week later, including his personal affects such as the watch, the gold pencil, and currency."
John Jacob Astor IV's Patek Philippe pocket watch, sold by Tiffany & Co. in 1904, will be auctioned on April 22 in Chicago. The watch, found on Astor's body after the Titanic sank, is estimated to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000. Alongside it, a gold pencil is also up for auction, estimated at $10,000 to $20,000. Astor, the richest passenger on the Titanic, was on a honeymoon with his pregnant wife when the tragedy occurred.
