Alex Matisse, great-grandson of artist Henri Matisse, initially struggled with the pressure of his family legacy in art. Despite having artistic talent, he chose a different route, becoming a successful artisan potter and founding East Fork in North Carolina. Recently, he launched the Matisse Collection, incorporating motifs inspired by Henri's works into pottery, including plates and mugs, thus reconnecting with his heritage while establishing his own artistic voice.
"I really wanted to escape my great-grandfather's legacy. I felt like if I became an artist, there would always intrinsically be a comparison to Henri's work."
"When he was starting out as a ceramist, Alex fell in love with a community of potters who had settled in North Carolina, creating rugged utilitarian pieces."
