"Each statuette stands thirteen and a half inches tall, weighs 8 and half pounds and takes about six months to complete. The Oscar statue starts as a wax figure, then every line gets smoothed and prepped for a ceramic bath. After that, it is filled with bronze and sent 70 miles south to New York City, where it receives a beautiful 24K gold coating."
"It gives it a sense of timelessness. It's this heavy object. It's meaningful. Each Oscar Statue has a unique serial number, which is stamped by AMPAS, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences."
"I get overwhelmed with joy watching it on TV, you know, it's a lot of sweat, hard work and talent that goes behind it."
Oscar statuettes are manufactured at Urban Art Projects in Rock Tavern, New York, where each statue undergoes a meticulous six-month production process. Standing 13.5 inches tall and weighing 8.5 pounds, each statuette begins as a wax figure with carefully smoothed lines prepared for a ceramic bath. The figure is then filled with bronze and transported 70 miles to New York City for a 24K gold coating. Upon return to Rock Tavern, the statue is assembled to its base and finished before shipment to the Academy. Each Oscar receives a unique serial number stamped by AMPAS, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
