"Always starring women and their interior lives, these stories historically amplify what you don't see - the negative space, the parts unspoken. On the surface they are beautiful and serene, but underneath they speak about power and systems, who has it, who doesn't, and what it takes to survive. Seen now, these ballets feel less like coincidence and more like reflections of our moment."
"Now. An Evening of Solos, choreographed by longtime friends and collaborators Gregg Bielemeier, Randee Paufve, and Cydney Wilkes, and performed by Portland dancer and Ten Tiny Dances creator Mike Barber, asks within the choreographic context: "What's it like to create and dance now?" As a dancer over 60. Breakin' Portland, created and directed by Michael Galen, amplifies the personal stories of the BIPOC men who shaped Portland's breaking scene."
February in Oregon features an unusual clustering of four classic fairytale ballets — The Little Mermaid, two versions of Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty — appearing on stages within weeks. Fairy tales center women's interior lives and reveal negative space, unspoken parts, and underlying themes of power, systems, survival, and who holds authority. Contemporary programming complements the classics with socially and politically engaged works from Urban Bush Women and Gibney Company. Now. An Evening of Solos interrogates creating and dancing as an older artist, while Breakin' Portland spotlights BIPOC breaking pioneers. Let's Screen Dance debuts as a new dance film festival.
