"Art UK's Public Art Manager, Tracy Jenkins, stated, 'Our initial aim for the project was simple: we wanted to record 5,000 murals and wall-based artworks from across the U.K.,' highlighting the project's extensive scope."
"The database includes many artworks that are decades old, emphasizing their sites and condition in case they're ever threatened by future redevelopments, showcasing the importance of preservation."
Art UK serves as a digital platform connecting viewers to public collections, featuring over 21,000 artworks from around 3,500 collections. The initiative to map and catalogue street art and murals has added more than 6,600 new works in two years. The project aims to record a diverse range of murals and wall-based artworks from A.D. 1000 to the present, with volunteers contributing over 5,000 hours to document these pieces, ensuring their history and condition are preserved.
