"Lace up your sneakers and hold onto your hats: Theater lovers will have to run from venue to venue in order to catch all the productions opening as January comes to a close. Corrib Theatre is presenting , a variety show celebrating the Irish holiday Imboc; and Donnie's new play about Gert Boyle, It's Not All About Me, is opening at triangle productions!"
"Tigard's Broadway Rose is just the second theater in the U.S. to stage the solo musical , starring Malia Tippets; and staging its first Mike Lew play of the season, Profile Theatre is starting the year with the sharp comedy Tiger Style!, while Stumptown Stages is favoring Portland with that zesty blast from the past, . For more fresh-off-the-press works, Chapel Theatre is producing its annual Play Festival, beginning Jan. 22."
"The sad part of theater, says Illya deTorres of Chapel Theatre Company in Milwaukie, is that the experience evaporates. "It's like being in summer camp," he says. "It just goes by in a blur." That's particularly true for Chapel's annual play festival, which runs Jan. 22-Feb. 1. DeTorres, who's the theater's technical director, says festival artists build relationships during "two weeks of prep and two weeks of rehearsals, and then the show goes up, and it's done.""
Multiple Portland-area theaters present a wave of new productions as January ends, requiring audiences to move among venues to catch shows. Corrib Theatre, triangle productions, Broadway Rose, Profile Theatre, and Stumptown Stages are among companies staging new works and revivals. Chapel Theatre Company produces an annual Play Festival running Jan. 22–Feb. 1 that features 10-minute plays and involves two weeks of prep plus two weeks of rehearsals. Chapel operates from a renovated church opened in February 2018, hosts other companies and a dance residency, and produces two mainstage shows each year in addition to the festival.
