Brooklyn Museum's Africa Collection to Get a Brand New Space
"The tall ceilings, as well as the attention to lighting, wall placement, and casework will ensure that the collection will be beautifully showcased. Each space was carefully planned through both a transdisciplinary and decolonial lens."
"In anticipation of the new construction, the curators conducted a collection overview and selected several previously unseen works for conservation treatment, as they'll soon be getting airtime in the galleries."
The Brooklyn Museum is investing $13 million to create a permanent exhibition space for its Arts of Africa collection, which includes over 4,500 objects. The new 6,400 square feet of galleries will connect North African art with the rest of the continent's historical legacy. The renovation is led by Peterson Rich Office in collaboration with the museum's curatorial team. Curators have planned an inaugural installation featuring over 300 works, emphasizing material and cultural exchange through a transdisciplinary and decolonial lens.
