Broadway Mom Turns Down Starring Role ... Because Her Kids Need Her
"I realize now that my family needs me. Going back into a rehearsal process, an intense tech process, and an intense preview time is just not possible for me and my young kids right now,"
"The industry is built in such a way that it's not super duper supportive of what parents need,"
"But the way the industry is shifting in favor of accommodating working parents, I'm really hopeful for what's to come."
Caissie Levy performs the role of Mother in Ragtime while raising two children in New Jersey with husband David Reiser. Izaiah, almost 10, enjoys karate, animals, space and Star Wars. Talulah, 4, is energetic and precocious. Levy copes with long commutes, minimal sleep and career decisions driven by family needs. The theater industry has not historically supported parental needs but is beginning to shift toward greater accommodation. After spending more than two years on a production of The Lost Boys, Levy decided to remain with Ragtime and declined the new show because intensive rehearsal and preview schedules were incompatible with caring for young children.
