Believe the HYPE: Bag&Baggage's new youth performance group exemplifies a company that looks to theater's future * Oregon ArtsWatch
Briefly

The Hillsboro Youth Performance Ensemble (HYPE) engages young participants in an immersive theater experience, where they not only perform a new play but learn vital skills for theater production. On a sunny Saturday, students rehearse Grizelda's Day Off In Hell (Michigan) under the guidance of artistic director Nik Whitcomb and volunteer Mindy Mawhirter. They balance fun and education, experimenting with performances while honing skills in areas from stage management to budgeting. HYPE serves as a bridge between academic and professional theater training.
Even though they frequently have to consult their scripts for their next line or move, that doesn't prevent the students from giving it their all... A mix of fun and intensive education drives their learning process.
This spring, this first HYPE cohort is learning all about how to make their own show and put it on stage, but also the myriad other skills it takes to make theater.
