"The possibility of having recovered a hitherto unknown painting by the Renaissance genius it would be the fifth attributed to the man responsible for the frescoes on the dome of the Sistine Chapel is revolutionizing the national and international art world, despite the fact that there is still a certain degree of caution."
"A few days after receiving the painting, and upon closer inspection of the canvas, which had been cleaned and restored, they discovered two barely discernible monograms in the lower part of the painting."
"The catalogue noted that the iconography of the painting expresses a heterogeneous figurative culture, dictated by Tuscan-Roman influences inspired by the models of Andrea del Sarto, Pontormo, Francesco Salviati and, of course, Michelangelo."
Belgian collectors acquired the 'Spirituali Pieta' in 2024, a painting originally attributed to an anonymous artist and previously unsold at a 2020 Genoa auction with an estimated value of 2,000-3,000 euros. Upon cleaning and restoration, the collectors discovered two barely discernible monograms in the lower portion of the canvas. Following in-depth analysis and multiple tests by a Belgian expert, the painting has been newly attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti. The work depicts Jesus Christ with arms crossed, supported by a weeping Virgin Mary, executed in oil on linen canvas. If confirmed, this attribution would represent only the fifth known painting on canvas by the Renaissance master responsible for the Sistine Chapel frescoes, generating significant interest and cautious optimism within the international art community.
