Brian Croskey, a 55-year-old inmate at Rikers Island, finds solace in creating line art during his confinement. Serving an eight-month sentence for petit larceny, he dedicates his drawings, especially one titled "Black Flower" for his sister, to express love for his family. His work was featured in a historic exhibition at the Herbert Von King Cultural Arts Center, showcasing art by Rikers inmates. This event marked a rare opportunity for Croskey, who called the experience of presenting his art "big," as it allowed him a temporary escape from his imprisonment while connecting with his passion for creativity.
"Itâs part of my solitude. I like to sit down at the table and doodle and create something new," Croskey said, emphasizing the therapeutic nature of his art.
"Black Flower,' dedicated to my sister, represents my love for family and partners. It's a lot of hearts, a lot of roses involved," Croskey described his artistic inspiration.
