"Here at ArtsWatch, we take special pride in empowering everyone who has a hand in producing content, knowing it leads to exceptional results. When people follow their passions and interests, they do their best work. It plays to people's strengths and what they know best. It raises the standard of quality. It levels the playing field so that decision-making is in the hands of many. More than anything, it makes people happy and gives them a point of pride."
"We take care to cultivate many kinds of voices from many kinds of communities, knowing it makes for a richer and stronger variety of coverage and makes people feel seen and heard. Community in this case can mean: Artistic discipline Racial, age, or gender identity Professional background Geographic region Unlike traditional arts news at a legacy media company, where the critics are the paid professional journalists who comment on artists, ArtsWatch takes a more equitable, collaborative approach. ArtsWatch is by and for the community."
A sixth-grade student received a science catalog of experiments and research projects, with points assigned to each project and the freedom to choose both projects and target grade level. That autonomy created excitement, ownership, and a desire for more learning. ArtsWatch applies the same principle to arts coverage by empowering everyone involved in producing content, believing that passion-driven work improves quality, leverages strengths, equalizes decision-making, and increases pride and happiness. ArtsWatch cultivates diverse voices across disciplines, identities, professions, and regions, and emphasizes an equitable, collaborative model of coverage rather than relying solely on paid professional critics.
