Anti-ICE Nativities Take a Stand Against Trump's Cruelty
"ICE WAS HERE."
"The people of God have the right to expect that, when they come to church, they will encounter genuine opportunities for prayer and Catholic worship - not divisive political messaging,"
"the Church's norms prohibit the use of sacred objects for any purpose other than the devotion of God's people."
"Due to ICE activity in our community, the Holy Family is in hiding."
A nativity at St. Susanna Parish in Dedham omitted the Holy Family and displayed a sign reading "ICE WAS HERE" alongside the LUCE defense hotline number. The Archdiocese of Boston asked for the scene's removal, stating that the Church's norms prohibit using sacred objects for anything other than devotion and that worship spaces should not carry divisive political messaging. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons condemned the display as "abhorrent" and labeled the pastor an "activist reverend." Similar anti-ICE nativity displays have appeared in Chicago and Evanston with messages about ICE activity and unsettling imagery.
