"Drawing inspiration from the Renaissance atmosphere of Palazzo Grimani, Boafo turns his gaze to the rich Venetian portrait tradition. The artist is creating a series of new works specifically for the exhibition, directly referencing this historical context and the unique architecture of the palace."
"Boafo's joyous portraits of solely Black people strike a chord, not only with savvy market operators but also with cultural commentators across the creative industries,"
"inspired by the expressionistic portraiture of the Vienna Secession artists Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele"
Amoako Boafo will present new and recent works at Museo di Palazzo Grimani in Venice this spring in his first solo show in Italy, co-organised by Gagosian and coinciding with the 61st Venice Biennale (9 May–22 November). Boafo is creating a series of works that reference the Renaissance atmosphere, Venetian portrait tradition, and the palace's unique architecture. Boafo opened dot.ateliers artist residencies in Accra in 2022 and is known for joyous portraits of Black subjects and a fingerprint pigment technique. His auction record is $3.4m for Hands Up (2018). Gagosian cites influences from Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. Museo di Palazzo Grimani in Santa Maria Formosa is part of the Musei Archeologici Nazionali di Venezia e Della Laguna and was transformed in the 16th century by heirs of Doge Antonio Grimani.
