"comes from that same space of reflection, but this time through my love for tennis"
"With Backyard, I hope to create that kind of environment for young people, a space where sport isn't just about competition but about confidence, connection and self-expression,"
"It's a way to remind them that the court, like the studio, can be a place of creativity and growth."
"Backyard is about more than tennis. It's about creating a platform for youth, for mentorship and for community,"
Amoako Boafo founded Backyard Community Club in Osu, Accra, on a tight plot where he grew up. The project centers on Ghana's first regulation clay tennis court and offers free tennis lessons to local children. The design by Accra-based DeRoche Projects features a four-metre-high wall of precast rammed-earth panels, shaded benches, changing rooms, and integrated planting of fruit and herbs such as coconut, peppermint, soursop, mango, lemongrass and guava. The space emphasizes sport as a means of confidence, connection, self-expression and mentorship, treating the court as a creative space akin to a studio.
