Amici Dance Theatre Company: Our Time
"That is because the worth of Amici Dance Theatre Company, and its latest production, Our Time, cannot be measured in something as trivial as rating stars, but rather in the priceless values of love, community and inclusivity. Let me explain: Amici Dance Theatre Company was founded in 1980 as a collective committed to inclusive performance, uniting disabled and non-disabled artists."
"Amici was the brainchild of Wolfgang Stange (1947-2024), a Berlin-born artist who settled in London and trained at the London School of Contemporary Dance. His approach to performance was radical: he placed the emphasis on the transformative power of movement, regardless of an individual's physical, mental or emotional limitations. He is credited as having created in Amici a space for authentic expression."
"Stange's death in 2024 came as a blow to Amici, but by then his work had taken root, and the company, currently under interim artistic director Elaine Thomas, will carry on. Our Time, its first post-Stange show, is a tribute to its founder and to the man he shared his creative and personal life with the Sri Lankan artist George Beven, who was, by all accounts, Stange's muse and anchor."
"Directed by Michael Vale, Our Time traces key moments from their lives together in a succession of scenes set over decades in London, Berlin and Sri Lanka, a story told with live music, song, movement and image projections. It starts with a prologue featuring Wolfgang Stange, performed by the hugely engaging dancer Ross Black, and George Beven, in an intense performance from non-dancer Gurpreet Dosanjh."
