American Museum of Natural History unveils new For the Win exhibit | amNewYork
"The collection, which will open at the Melissa and Keith Meister Gallery, features more than 70 championship rings, trophies, medals, and other memorabilia spanning nearly 150 years of sporting history."
"Curating this exhibit was challenging because we had to ask for all the pieces in the show from athletes to leagues to archives. A lot of these pieces are very firmly in a stadium or in the locker room, as in the case of the Liberty's 2024 championship. Bringing those pieces to a museum can be a big ask, so we're really grateful for all the athletes and leagues that said yes."
"The legendary Jesse Owens' gold medal from the 1936 Olympics and Liberty superstar Breanna Stewart's 2024 WNBA championship ring are on display. A Babe Ruth Crown given to Yankees legend Yogi Berra and former Giants defensive end Justin Tuck's 2008 Super Bowl ring are displayed next to Kevin Durant's 2017 Golden State Warriors championship ring."
"Other notable additions include the Vince Lombardi Trophy, given to the winner of the Super Bowl, Ali Krieger's 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup medal, an Olympic torch from the 1968 Summer Mexico City Games, the Phillip F. Anschutz trophy won by NYCFC in 2021, and Gotham FC's National Women's Soccer League 2023 trophy."
The American Museum of Natural History presents For the Win: Objects of Sports Excellence before its public opening. The collection opens at the Melissa and Keith Meister Gallery and includes more than 70 championship rings, trophies, medals, and memorabilia covering nearly 150 years of sporting history. The exhibit centers on the drive to be the greatest and the best, reflecting the human qualities sports bring out. Curating required requesting items from athletes, leagues, and archives, including pieces closely tied to stadiums or locker rooms. Displayed items include Jesse Owens’ 1936 Olympic gold medal and Breanna Stewart’s 2024 WNBA championship ring, along with major trophies and medals from multiple sports and eras.
