A View From the Easel
"In August there is more happening in this village than in Williamsburg. At night, the one bar. Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday the fruttivendolo comes up the mountain. Tuesday is the pescivendolo. Once I have provisions I return to the studio to paint."
A painter works from an ancestral village near Pollino National Park in Italy, using an old sausage factory as a studio and growing olives. Time in the space began in April 2024, while the connection to the village dates back decades through family history. Daily life follows village rhythms: vendors travel up the mountain for vegetables and fish, and the car-free narrow passageways require walking single file. After gathering provisions, painting fills the day, followed by a single bar at night. Regular hiking and the landscape trigger intense déjà vu and a feeling of being at home, supported by a belief in memory of a place not previously lived.
