"I adore classical ballet, but classical ballet is not the only style that there is in the world,"
"So yes, there are 'The Nutcracker' productions that are mainly based around classical ballet. But why not see something that has evolved the art form?"
"We use that beautiful music, but we also make some space in it for the flamenco castanets, for an accordion, for the Ukrainian Hopak,"
Brooklyn Ballet's The Brooklyn Nutcracker reimagines the classic by weaving Brooklyn's cultures and traditions into the score and choreography. Tristan Grannum, Director of Community Outreach, reprises the Snow King role and highlights openness to multiple dance styles beyond classical ballet. Miku Kawamura performs alongside Grannum, celebrating Brooklyn-specific cultural influences. The production incorporates Native American hoop dance, Middle Eastern belly dance, Brooklyn street styles, flamenco castanets, accordion, and the Ukrainian Hopak. Artistic director and founder Lynn Parkerson frames the work as a bridge between tradition and innovation that keeps classical ballet presented, alive, and welcoming to new participants.
