A Legendary Mural From the 1980s Has Been Repainted in East Oakland
"OAKLAND IS PROUD"
"'Dream, would you allow me to write TDK?'"
"Is you stupid, man? Of course you can."
"TDK out-clipped BSK by a long shot."
Del Phresh painted 'OAKLAND IS PROUD' on a wall in East Oakland in the mid-'80s, creating a symbol of the Town's resolve with broad cultural reach into city marketing, album covers, tribute murals and national television. Mike 'Dream' Francisco formed TDK with friends and cousins and grew the crew from a few members into dozens, often overshadowing BSK in the late '80s and '90s. TDK created some of the Bay Area's best-known murals and contributed deeply to local culture. Phresh and Dream sketched together at Built to Last Tattoo in the late '90s, and Dream encouraged Phresh to write TDK. Peers credit Phresh with helping put Oakland on the map and describe him as funny, personable and caring.
