8 December museum events that will make you grateful the shutdown is over
"Kick off the season with the lighting of the Library of Congress's literature-themed Christmas tree in the Jefferson Building's Great Hall during the holiday edition of the Live! At the Library weekly after-hours programming. The evening, which requires free timed-entry tickets, also includes live music, seasonal cocktails, pop-up talks and a chance to view the library's Hanukkah Menorah. Other Live! At the Library events in December to register for include the inaugural reading from U.S. Poet Laureate Arthur Sze on Dec. 11"
"'Finding Awe' at the National Gallery of Art Mindfulness and art appreciation collide during the National Gallery of Art's "Finding Awe" series, which focuses deeply on the intricacies of a single work of art for a 90-minute session. Inspired by University of California at Berkeley professor of psychology Dacher Keltner's research on our sense of wonder, this class will invite art fans to look very closely at a selected piece, then take the "awe practices" learned here back into their daily lives."
Local museums and cultural institutions in Washington, D.C. have resumed public programming following the government shutdown, offering a mix of free and ticketed events. The Library of Congress will host a literature-themed holiday celebration featuring the lighting of a Christmas tree, live music, seasonal cocktails, pop-up talks, and the Hanukkah Menorah, plus readings and concerts in December. The National Gallery of Art offers a "Finding Awe" series promoting close visual study and mindfulness using Giovanni Paolo Panini's architectural paintings. The National Museum of the American Indian will hold a Native Art Market in the Potomac Atrium to meet and greet Indigenous artists from North and South America.
