Anthropic warned that Mythos, an unreleased AI model, is extraordinarily effective at finding and exploiting security vulnerabilities across operating systems, web browsers, industrial software, and health-care platforms. Access is limited to trusted partners, but experts fear cheaper, widely available models with fewer safeguards could arrive soon. This could enable prolific hackers to target many valuable, load-bearing computer systems, creating a tumultuous period in cybersecurity. Anthropic suggested that security tooling has historically benefited defenders more than attackers and that the same outcome may eventually occur. OpenAI released a model update with similar capability and emphasized empowering defenders to find and fix problems faster.
