"SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Waymo just got approved to roll out their autonomous vehicles in phases at San Francisco International Airport. "We got Waymo's driving all over the city right now. We are the city of the future. It has to happen here, and it will," said San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie. Waymo mapped the airport which is in San Mateo County, in the spring - a process that took 30 days. Mayor Lurie said safety will be the focus."
"Waymo will need to pass two phases before it's open to the public on phase three. "Phase one is essentially testing the operation on our roadways. Meaning no passengers, just autonomous operation with a Waymo driver behind the wheel just in case. Phase two will be fully autonomous with no driver. The passengers will be either Waymo employees or SFO employees," said Doug Yakel, SFO spokesperson."
Waymo received approval to begin phased deployment of autonomous vehicles at San Francisco International Airport after a 30-day mapping of the facility. City leadership emphasized safety and reliability as central priorities for vehicles entering city roadways. Deployment requires passing phase one testing with a safety driver and no passengers, followed by phase two fully autonomous operation carrying Waymo or SFO employees, before reaching public service in phase three. Airport officials hold weekly meetings with Waymo to address operational unknowns such as vehicle stalls and recoverability. Waymo already operates at Phoenix and plans commercial operations at San Jose later this year.
