"The technology is upon us,"
"There are many miles to go in terms of the most sophisticated swarm abilities, but there are plenty of reasons to fear even where we are today."
"If there were a battle to go down today, some of the first engagements might be with unmanned systems,"
"It's a force multiplier for special operations forces or for any military element. Now it becomes incumbent on the defender to figure out a way to down all of those drones, while not also hurting his own capabilities."
Ukraine has begun operational deployments of AI-powered drone swarms using software from Swarmer, with battlefield units conducting more than 100 missions using three to eight drones per deployment against Russian positions. Drone swarms operate with high autonomy and employ swarm intelligence that mirrors group behavior seen in birds or insects, enabling coordinated actions with humans largely out of the loop. Swarms can serve as an early engagement force and a campaign force multiplier, prompting a parallel race to improve offensive swarm capabilities and to develop countermeasures that can neutralize many drones without degrading friendly systems.
