OpenAI has launched GPT-oss, a new family of language models with open weights, enabling operation on high-end laptops and smartphones. The models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, cater to different hardware capabilities, with the latter suitable for most desktops and laptops. This release marks OpenAI's first open-weight model since GPT-2 in 2019. Sam Altman expressed confidence in the models' usability and performance, hoping the launch fosters innovation and accessibility within the AI field, subsequently allowing researchers and developers to create new products and conduct further research.
We believe this is the best and most usable open model in the world, offering real-world performance comparable to o4-mini.
We expect a meaningful uptick in the rate of innovation in our field, allowing many more people to do important work than were able to before.
