AI in radiology has evolved from a predictive threat into an essential tool that significantly enhances the capabilities of specialists. As the workforce faces a potential shortage of up to 42,000 radiologists by 2033, AI has become a game-changer, helping radiologists measure organs, flag abnormalities, and detect diseases early. Instead of diminishing job opportunities, AI has led to a 55% increase in radiologists at institutions like Mayo Clinic, where a dedicated team of AI professionals has developed over 250 models to assist in various diagnostic processes.
AI has become radiologists' secret weapon, allowing them to instantly measure organs, automatically flag abnormalities, and even detect diseases years before conventional methods.
Five years from now, it will be malpractice not to use AI, says John Halamka, president of the Mayo Clinic Platform, who oversees digital initiatives.
