OpenAI's president breaks down the AMD deal: 'We need as much computing power as we can possibly get'

OpenAI reached an agreement with AMD to deploy 6 gigawatts of GPUs, with the first gigawatt using AMD Instinct MI450 expected to begin in the second half of 2026. OpenAI executives emphasized urgent and growing demand for AI compute and warned of an impending shortage of GPU capacity across the industry. OpenAI President Greg Brockman described the prospect of "absolute compute scarcity" and urged industry cooperation to build capacity in advance of a "compute desert." CFO Sarah Friar identified being "constantly under compute" as a major constraint. CEO Sam Altman said the partnership will accelerate progress by leveraging AMD's high-performance chips to expand AI capabilities for more users.
