OpenAI announced that it will discontinue the availability of its powerful AI model GPT-4.5 via API on July 14. Developers will need to transition to the newly launched GPT-4.1, which the company claims provides similar or improved capabilities at a lower operational cost. GPT-4.5, the largest AI model developed by OpenAI, was noted for its high expense and performance limitations on certain industry benchmarks. It will remain available on ChatGPT for paying customers but will be phased out of the API to prioritize future model development.
OpenAI will soon wind down the availability of GPT-4.5 via its API, transitioning developers to the newly launched GPT-4.1, which offers better cost efficiency.
GPT-4.5, despite being OpenAI's most powerful model yet, falls short of 'frontier-level' benchmarks and is very expensive to operate.
