OpenAI has launched two open-weight AI reasoning models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, both available on Hugging Face. The gpt-oss-120b model can run on an Nvidia GPU, while the lighter model can operate on consumer laptops with 16GB of memory. This marks OpenAI's first open language model release since GPT-2 over five years ago. The models can handle complex queries by connecting to more powerful closed models if necessary. OpenAI's shift to open-source comes amid competition from Chinese AI labs and calls for American developers to embrace open innovation.
The models come in two sizes: a larger and more capable gpt-oss-120b model that can run on a single Nvidia GPU, and a lighter-weight gpt-oss-20b model that can run on a consumer laptop with 16GB of memory.
The launch marks OpenAI's first 'open' language model since GPT-2, which was released more than five years ago.
OpenAI has generally favored a proprietary, closed-source development approach, helping to establish a profitable business selling access to its AI models via API.
CEO Sam Altman has stated he believes OpenAI has been 'on the wrong side of history' regarding open sourcing its technologies.
