Meta patents AI that lets dead people post from the great beyond
"The tech giant was granted a patent in December that would allow it to simulate a user via artificial intelligence when he or she is absent from the social network for extended periods, including, "for example, when the user takes a long break or if the user is deceased.""
"The patent covers a bot that could simulate your activity across Meta's products, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads-making posts, leaving comments, and interacting with other users. It could even, potentially, communicate directly with people via chats or video calls, the patent reads."
"Withdrawing from a social media platform can affect "the user experience of several users," the patent reads. "The impact on the users is much more severe and permanent if that user is deceased and can never return to the social networking platform.""
Meta was granted a December patent for AI that can simulate a user's presence when the user is absent for extended periods, including long breaks or death. The system could generate posts, comments, interactions, and possibly direct messages, chats, or video calls across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Andrew Bosworth is listed as the primary inventor and the patent was first filed in November 2023. A Meta spokesperson said the company has no plans to move forward with this example. The patent cites potential user-experience impacts when someone withdraws or dies as a motivation for maintaining interactions through simulated accounts. Similar concepts have appeared before: Microsoft obtained a related patent in 2021, and startups like Eternos and HereAfter AI already offer digital-twin services.
