Elon Musk and Sam Altman are still trading jabs over OpenAI
"You stole a non-profit,"
"i helped turn the thing you left for dead into what should be the largest non-profit ever.you know as well as anyone a structure like what openai has now is required to make that happen."
"you also wanted tesla to take openai over, no nonprofit at all. and you said we had a 0% of success. now you have a great AI company and so do we."
"can't we all just move on?"
Elon Musk and Sam Altman exchanged public barbs on X over OpenAI, nonprofit control, and a Tesla Roadster reservation and refund. The two cofounded OpenAI in 2015 with Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. Musk left OpenAI's board in 2018 and later founded xAI in 2023; Altman serves as OpenAI CEO. Musk accused Altman of stealing a nonprofit, while Altman said he revived what Musk left "for dead" and defended OpenAI's structure. Altman posted a July 2018 reservation screenshot showing a $45,000 Roadster deposit and a bounced $50,000 refund request. Representatives did not comment.
