"We're supporting Waymo and other operators through our passenger pilots, and pro-innovation regulations to make self-driving cars a reality on British roads."
"Unlike human drivers, automated vehicles don't get tired, don't get distracted and don't drive under the influence."
"competitive but premium"
Waymo plans an April pilot for robotaxis in London and aims to carry paying passengers later in the year once regulations permit. The UK government intends to introduce rules in the second half of 2026 to allow fully autonomous taxi services, while actively supporting trials and mapping. Vehicles are currently driven by safety drivers but will operate without humans once approved. The government estimates the sector could add £42bn to the economy by 2035 and create nearly 40,000 jobs. Waymo’s cars use lidar, cameras, radar and microphones with real-time computing, and fares will be competitive but premium.
