Coding as Craft: Going Back to the Old Gym
Briefly

Shopify's CEO Tobi Lütke views AI as essential for coding, suggesting that not embracing it may lead to obsolescence. However, this idea struck a chord with developers who cherish the manual craft of coding. One engineer expressed discomfort with the concept of 'reflexive AI usage,' highlighting that the struggle and learning moments in coding are critical to the craft. Drawing an analogy with Rocky III, the engineer points out that returning to fundamentals and avoiding excessive reliance on technology is key for mastery and skill development.
The more I reflected on this exchange, as well as other comments from my betters, the more I realized it connects to something deeper about our relationship with technology and craft.
If people stop the occasional deadlock of grinding teeth, looking at a problem, crying, going for a walk, praying and screaming until suddenly it makes sense (and you learn something!), I'd call it severe regression, not progress.
