Character.ai, founded in 2021 and used by millions, will prevent under-18s from conversing with virtual characters from 25 November and will limit minors to generating content such as videos. The restriction follows reports and feedback from regulators, safety experts, and parents raising concerns about chatbot interactions with teenagers. Several US lawsuits from parents, including one linked to a teenager's death, have targeted the platform and described it as posing a clear and present danger to young people. Experts warn that chatbots can fabricate information, offer excessive encouragement, and feign empathy, creating risks for vulnerable youths.
