The Atari 2600, released in 1977, features a chess engine that successfully defeated ChatGPT in a recent experiment by architect Robert Caruso. Despite ChatGPT's advanced technology, it confused chess pieces, often mistaking rooks for bishops and losing track of game positions. Caruso expected a lighthearted retro challenge but found the AI's performance lacking, as it made numerous blunders and failed to recognize the chessboard setup effectively. Even when using standard chess notation, ChatGPT continued to falter and eventually conceded the game after a lengthy session full of corrections.
ChatGPT got absolutely wrecked on the beginner level, confusing rooks for bishops and losing track of pieces repeatedly. It was a humbling experience for the AI.
I had to stop ChatGPT from making awful moves and correct its board awareness multiple times per turn. It kept promising to improve if we just started over.
