California adopted the Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act (TFAIA), previously Senate Bill 53, to require AI companies to disclose how they will avoid serious model risks and to admit any critical safety incidents. The law includes whistleblower protections, mandates to meet international standards, and a mechanism to report safety incidents. The law establishes a consortium to build a computing cluster accessible in the public cloud to develop safe, sustainable, and ethical AI. California hosts many AI developers, giving the law potential broad impact. Anthropic supported the bill while calling for federal legislation. TFAIA was written by Senator Scott Wiener.
