AWS: Britain needs more nuclear power for AI datacenters
Briefly

In an interview, Matt Garman, the head of AWS, emphasizes the need for more nuclear energy generation in the UK to meet the rising energy demands of upcoming AI datacenters. AWS plans to invest £8 billion ($10.6 billion) in its UK infrastructure by 2028, coinciding with similar investments from Google and Microsoft. This rush to build new facilities, spurred by the government's AI Opportunities Action Plan, highlights the increasing power needs of AI technologies, with global consumption by datacenters expected to double by 2030, raising energy supply concerns.
"I believe nuclear is a big part of that, particularly as we look ten years out," he said.
The cloud computing arm of Amazon isn't the only biz popping up new bit barns in Blighty.
Approval was granted for what is set to become Europe's largest cloud and AI datacenter at a site in Hertfordshire.
Global consumption by bit barns is forecast to more than double by 2030, the International Energy Agency (IEA) recently warned.
