Amazon touts Vulcan, its first robot with a sense of 'touch'
Briefly

Amazon has launched a revolutionary robot named Vulcan for its warehouses, capable of handling about 75% of the packages through advanced gripping and pushing technology. Vulcan's unique ability to ‘feel’ items allows it to learn and adapt while stowing packages efficiently. Currently operational in Spokane and Hamburg, Vulcan aims to reduce labor-intensive tasks in hard-to-reach storage areas. Importantly, Amazon emphasizes that this does not reduce human jobs, as workers are being trained for new roles in overseeing and maintaining the robots, fostering a more skilled workforce overall.
Vulcan represents a fundamental leap forward in robotics, not just seeing the world, but feeling it, enabling capabilities that were impossible for Amazon robots until now.
The first Vulcan units are already in operation in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg in Germany, making it easier to reach the highest and lowest points in storage carriers.
Women and Vulcan will be kept separate for safety reasons to avoid the risk of injuries, with a focus on creating new roles for workers.
Our vision is to scale this technology across our network, enhancing operational efficiency, improving workplace safety, and supporting our workforce's growth.
