Altman wants to extend CHIPS Act tax breaks to AI infra
"Free money is always better than a loan!"
"We think US reindustrialization across the entire stack - fabs, turbines, transformers, steel, and much more - will help everyone in our industry, and other industries (including us),"
"This is "super different from loan guarantees to OpenAI," he wrote. "It would be good for the whole country, many industries, and all players in those industries.""
OpenAI seeks federal tax credits under the CHIPS Act to subsidize AI server production, bit barns, and grid components while rejecting government-backed loans. The company promotes US reindustrialization across fabs, turbines, transformers, steel, and related infrastructure to benefit multiple industries. The Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credit (AMIC) currently offers up to a 35 percent tax credit on eligible chip-related infrastructure as of July. OpenAI and its executives have urged expansion of AMIC to cover servers, datacenters, and power improvements. A prior proposal for a federal backstop drew attention and prompted a partial retraction from company leadership.
