For 35 years, attention has focused on Kryptos, a coded sculpture behind the CIA headquarters, with only one unsolved section remaining. While multiple organizations, including the CIA and NSA, deciphered three segments, K4 has eluded all efforts, attracting numerous amateur sleuths. Recently, many have relied on AI tools to claim they've cracked the code, leading to a surge of submissions to artist Jim Sanborn, who remains frustrated by the false confidence exhibited by these users and their misguided solutions.
Sanborn contacted me recently to express his disgust with this development. "It feels like a major shift," he says. "The numbers [of submissions] have increased dramatically."
When one of them thinks they have an answer, they write to Jim Sanborn for confirmation. Sanborn is the artist who created the installation and the only person who knows the answer.
