AI Crushed the Math OlympiadOr Did It?
Briefly

The recent International Math Olympiad saw AI companies testing new models on a computerized approximation of the exam. OpenAI and Google DeepMind announced unofficial gold medals for solving five out of six problems. While this represents significant progress in AI's reasoning capabilities, not all models performed well in similar competitions. Respected researchers celebrated the achievements, but skepticism remains about AI's long-term role in professional mathematics.
The hype around this year's AI results is easy to understand because the olympiad is hard. In my senior year, I chose to focus on olympiad-style problems, which were more challenging.
Researchers like Sebastien Bubeck of OpenAI celebrated these models' successes as a moon landing moment by industry. However, questions remain about AI's ability to replace professional mathematicians.
