Arsenal could lose Premier League winning defender to Barcelona as they step up interest
Barcelona are reportedly considering a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie to fill a left-sided centre-back role. Hincapie spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Arsenal, with a €45 million option to buy included in the deal. Activating the option would trigger a five-year contract for the Ecuador international with Arsenal. Arsenal have not publicly confirmed the permanent transfer, while Barcelona are watching for any opening. Hincapie’s left-footed, aggressive, quick style and ability to play centre-back or left-back fit modern build-from-the-back needs. Arsenal’s advantage stems from negotiating the option when signing him from Leverkusen last summer, and Barcelona’s interest increased after cooling interest in Alessandro Bastoni. Arsenal’s control could limit Barcelona’s ability to complete a transfer unless Arsenal choose not to use the option.
