"According to MacRumors, Rivian says that the feature has been pushed live on Apple's side. However, the automaker has yet to officially launch the feature on its side, meaning that the building blocks are in place, but aren't yet connected together for Rivian owner to take advantage of it. The automaker reportedly told MacRumors that the feature is "coming soon.""
"The upcoming support for Rivian's R1 vehicles was noticed after a configuration file was spotted containing information about the feature's activation in Apple Wallet, an app on iPhone which stores sensitive information like credit card details and even digital drivers licenses behind Apple's Secure Enclave cryptoprocessor. Apple's Car Key feature allows iPhone and Apple Watch owners to use the device's NFC radio to act like a digital key to a supported vehicle."
Apple announced Car Key in 2020, and 33 automakers worldwide have pledged support since then. Manufacturer adoption has been slow, but support for Rivian R1 vehicles has been identified via a configuration file revealing activation details in Apple Wallet, which protects sensitive items with Apple's Secure Enclave. Apple has enabled the feature on its side, while Rivian has not yet activated it for owners and has indicated the feature is coming soon. Car Key uses NFC on iPhone and Apple Watch to function as a digital key, allowing lock, unlock, start, and other vehicle actions, including Express Mode without device unlock.
