NixOS is a Linux distribution that caters to users seeking a more robust alternative to mainstream distros like Ubuntu and Linux Mint. While it can be downloaded and run without installation, it requires some command-line familiarity. Users who are accustomed to apps like Chrome or Slack may find themselves frustrated. NixOS stands between user-friendly Ubuntu and more complex Arch Linux or Gentoo. During installation, users can choose from multiple desktop environments, but the absence of a graphical app store makes it less appealing for newcomers.
If you're uncomfortable using the command line or diving down rabbit holes to figure out how to do something that should 'just work out of the box,' then NixOS is probably not for you.
Not everyone wants an Ubuntu or Linux Mint distribution. I'm not saying those two operating systems aren't outstanding, but at some point, a Linux user might want something a bit more robust.
This from-scratch Linux distribution isn't nearly as difficult as Gentoo, but it's not quite as user-friendly as Ubuntu. Where does that leave it? I'd say somewhere between Ubuntu and Arch Linux.
First off, there's no GUI app store.
